When the EP/AgNPs were treated with SIF at pH 6.8 or 7.4, EP release was also time dependent; at 4 h, the amount of drug released was higher than that obtained at pH 1.2, and continuous prolonged release of 75%–88% of the initial amount of EP until 10 h was observed. This could be due to the interaction between the alkaline solvent and the positive charges of the EP compounds. Based on these results, we assume that sustained release is due to the diffusion of EP through the system and that release was regulated in a pH-dependent manner. The amount of total flavonoids in the EE and its fractions was measured by a colorimetric assay according to the method of Lamaison and Carnet ( 16), with some modifications.
