About this deal

The purpose of the various tests and war games that the students are subjected to is for the best of Gold to rise in Society based on merit alone. However, corruption often results in various aspects of The Institute being rigged to favor students from prominent families. For example, powerful Golds will sometimes rig the math-ups in The Passage to kill off the children of their political rivals, while Martian ArchGovernor Nero au Augustus bribed, threatened, and cajoled all of the Proctors on Mars in 737 PCE into rigging the war games to ensure that his son would become ArchPrimus.

A standard school year at The Institute is projected to last for ten months, [11] however individual years can be longer or shorter depending on various factors such as the students' performance. For example, the 542 nd class of the Mars Institute completed their education after only seven months, while the war games at the Institute on Io have been known to last for multiple years. [12]Originally the "Colors" were native Earth human beings who simply wore colored clothes that denoted their position. After conquering Earth the founding Golds of "The Society" used genetic engineering to cause members of each Color to have hair and eyes to match their caste. Upon arriving at the Institute, incoming students are shepherded into an open-air marble square in front of the school's gates that overlooks Agea and the rest of the Valles Marineris, with marble pillars on either side of the square. Vanna O'Lagalos - Gamma, daughter to Torron. Murdered when wandering Camp 121 alone at night, before the events of Iron Gold.

Victra au Julii - Sister to Antonia au Severus-Julii, trusted liutenant of Darrow, and wife of Sevro. Venus is infamous for the frequency of incidents where students of the Institute have been raped their classmates. [12] Dagan O'Lagalos - Gamma, Lyria's older brother. Aided in the Reaper's war effort alongside his brother and brother in-law.

The 'heaven' or afterlife the Reds believe in. Their deity figure, the Old Man, is said to to guide them after death.

At the Institute on Mars, the castle of House Mars is located within a highland region in the northern area of the Institute's grounds. The House has two towers to occupy in addition to their castle, named for the planet's moons, Phobos and Deimos. Anyway, the hero is a Red from Mars, a sixteen-year-old boy named Darrow (no last name, not even an informal patronymic, another strange omission, given no society of any complexity has ever made it impossible to identify individuals to third parties). On Mars, most of the Reds, millions of them, live harsh lives, entirely underground, mining helium-3 in hundreds of different, unconnected mines (Darrow’s is called Lykos; most of the names in the book are a farrago of Greek and Latin). The miners are told, and they believe, that they are part of a grand project to terraform Mars, which thanks to their efforts will someday be suitable for human habitation. (Technically, therefore, they are not slaves, but men bound to the land.) From them is concealed that the surface of Mars is already a paradise. Mining is an extremely dangerous job, and the lives of the Reds are short and physically brutal—although their society is depicted as virtuous and strong. Sex roles in Lykos are sensible. Women aren’t allowed to be miners, and the only births of children in the entire trilogy occur there (occasionally children appear elsewhere, as if by magic, never attended to by a mother). Homosexuality is regarded as vile. Hard work is honored. Religious belief is the norm. Lykos is, in essence, right-wing. Reds were socially engineered to be patriarchal. Women were expected to work less grueling tasks, such as harvesting silk, as outlined in the Board of Quality Control's Stratification Protocol. LowReds do not recieve clerically logged names - instead, they are given a designation that is a mix of letters and numbers from a Copper administrator (Ex. L17L6363, the designation for Darrow). Mines do seem to bear some cultural differences. Darrow specifies that the inhabitants of Lykos are a people of dance and song. Reds bear a significant cultural resemblance to the Irish, as most of the first Reds were refugees from Ireland after radiation from London turned the British Isles into a wasteland. This heritage is reflected in how Red slang is derived from Irish slang, and how Reds commonly have historically Irish names (Ex. Liam).

Due to their superior physique, Golds tend to live longer than humans of Old Earth, and Cellular Rejuvenation Therapy increases their lifespan further still. For example, Lorn au Arcos' father lived to 163 without any Cellular Rejuvenation Therapy. This also means that even Golds considered to be elderly are still fearsome in battle. The standard of House Mars is a one foot length of iron tipped with a howling wolf; a serpent coils beneath the wolf's feet, the star tipped pyramid of the Society beneath that. A five foot oak pole connects to the iron end. By pressing it to an enemy's forehead, a wolf sigil will appear, making that enemy into a slave of House Mars.
